The short answer
Yes, for most people who want to work in penetration testing, red teaming or security consulting, the OSCP® is still worth it in 2026. Hiring managers in those fields know what it tests, UK job ads that name it rose from 48 to 88 in a year, and a pass now gives you two credentials: the OSCP, which never expires, and the OSCP+™, which lasts three years.
It's a weaker buy if you're heading for blue team, GRC or management work. It also won't land a first job by itself. Junior pentest ads are scarce, so the certificate does most for you on top of IT experience, a home lab and written reports you can show.
No reliable source measures what "OSCP holders" earn, so the pay figures below are for the penetration tester role in the US, UK and India, each with its source, what it measures and the month we read it.
We're Hacker Blueprint. Our instructor holds the OSCP, our academy has more than 600 students, and around 7,000 people have claimed our prep materials. This page covers fit, pay, jobs and interviews, and links out for cost and difficulty.
Video: an OSCP study path and skills checklist
Our video "the FUN way to OSCP and your cybersecurity dream job!" starts with OffSec's exam bundles and enrolment, then lays out study plans at 1:06, why Active Directory matters at 5:09 and a technical skills checklist at 6:44, and closes with a roadmap summary at 11:30. It went up in January 2026, so check current prices in our cost breakdown and the full study plan in our OSCP+ roadmap.
Who the OSCP is worth it for
OffSec's exam guide says the certification "is relevant to roles such as penetration testers, security analysts, and consultants." The exam itself is the pentester's day job in miniature: 23 hours and 45 minutes of attacking machines and an Active Directory set, then 24 hours to write a professional report. The closer your target job is to that, the more the OSCP is worth to you.
| Your goal | Fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Pentester or security consultant | Strong | UK ads often pair it with CREST |
| Red team operator | Good as a base | Plan for red team certs such as CRTO or OSEP later |
| SOC analyst or blue team | Weak as a first cert | Defensive skills and SOC experience count for more |
| GRC, audit or management | Poor | Governance certs such as the CISSP fit these ads |
| New to IT | Too early | Build Linux, Windows and networking skills first |
OffSec's PEN-200 page lists a wider set of roles the course supports, from SOC analyst and threat hunter to cloud engineer and system administrator. Knowing how attacks work helps in all of them. If one of those is your target, compare the exam fee with the certifications and experience that the ads for that role ask for.
If you're choosing between offensive exams, our OSCP vs CPTS comparison sets the OSCP beside the CPTS, PNPT, CEH, CISSP, OSEP and PenTest+.
What the OSCP costs against what it can return
On November 2, 2026, OffSec's PEN-200 page listed the exam on its own at $1,699 and the course and exam bundle at $1,749. Retakes and OSCP+ upkeep cost extra, and our OSCP cost breakdown lists every fee with the page that publishes it. Against US and UK pentest pay, that fee is a small slice of a year's salary. Against Indian pay it's a much bigger one, which makes the number of attempts matter more than the price tag. The return depends on the job it helps you reach: it pays back fastest when it gets your CV through the screen for a pentest role or helps you move from IT into security, and it adds little to a governance career. Our guide to how hard the OSCP is helps you judge how ready you are before you buy.
OSCP salary: what pentesters earn in the US, UK and India
Search "OSCP salary" and you'll find confident single numbers. PayScale's OSCP certification page, for one, shows an average base of about $105,000, but it's built from 299 self-reported profiles across many job titles, so it can't separate what the certificate adds from what the job pays. We found no source that measures pay for OSCP holders reliably.
So the table shows pay for the penetration tester role, the job the exam is built around. We read every figure on November 2, 2026.
| Country | Source | Pay | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | Indeed | $127,771 average ($83,913 to $194,552) | 285 salaries from job ads, past 36 months |
| US | PayScale | $109,030 average base ($68,000 to $156,000) | 246 self-reported profiles |
| US | BLS | $129,180 median (May 2025) | All information security analysts |
| UK | ITJobsWatch | £65,000 median (£45,000 to £90,000) | 143 advertised salaries, six months to Nov 2 |
| UK | Indeed | £55,616 average (£32,839 to £94,191) | 122 reported salaries |
| UK | PayScale | £36,151 average base (£28,000 to £65,000) | 40 self-reported profiles |
| India | PayScale | ₹5.1 lakh average base (₹2 lakh to ₹20 lakh) | 117 self-reported profiles |
| India | Indeed | ₹17.3 lakh average (₹14.4 lakh to ₹20.8 lakh) | 13 reported salaries, January 2026 |
Ranges are the 10th to 90th percentile for PayScale and ITJobsWatch, and the low and high figures for Indeed.
Why the sources disagree
Indeed and ITJobsWatch read pay from job ads, so they show what employers offer, and pentest ads lean senior. PayScale asks people what they earn, which pulls in more juniors and smaller firms but rests on fewer answers: only 40 in the UK. The BLS has no penetration tester category at all, so its $129,180 median covers every information security analyst in the US, and O*NET's penetration tester profile borrows its wage from an even broader group of computer occupations.
For a first job, PayScale's US figures are the most useful: $72,823 average total pay for people with under a year of experience (67 salaries), rising to $99,712 at one to four years (155 salaries). In India, PayScale puts entry-level total pay at about ₹5 lakh, from 60 salaries.
The two readable Indian sources sit more than three times apart, and Indeed's figure rests on just 13 salaries. Treat both as rough bounds, and ask people already in the roles you want what the local offers look like.
ITJobsWatch also tracks UK ads that mention the OSCP. In the same six months, 88 permanent ads cited it, with a median advertised salary of £70,000 from 43 quoted salaries. More than half of those ads also named CREST, more than half asked for security clearance, and 46 were in London, where the median was £100,000. That median says more about senior, cleared, London roles than about the certificate on its own. None of these figures is a forecast of what you'll earn.
OSCP jobs: titles and what the ads ask for
The titles to search are penetration tester, security consultant, red team operator, application security tester and vulnerability analyst. Senior titles dominate. Of the 190 permanent UK pentest ads in ITJobsWatch's six-month sample, 13 were titled senior penetration tester and four junior penetration tester.
We read the 25 newest ads mentioning the OSCP on ITJobsWatch, a UK job-ad tracker, on November 2, 2026. The wording shows how employers treat it:
- "OSCP or equivalent"
- "OSCP, GPEN, GWAPT, CEH, or comparable credentials", listed as preferred
- "OSCP, CREST, CHECK, or similar certifications", listed as desirable
- certifications that "would be welcomed but are not essential"
- "Active OSCP Certification (Mandatory)", in a US role that also needed security clearance
Employers read the OSCP as one accepted proof of hands-on skill, often interchangeable with CREST or GIAC exams. None of those 25 ads was a junior or graduate role. One red team ad listed it next to CRTO, RTO2, OSEP, OSED and CREST CCT.
In the UK, CREST and CHECK came up more often than the OSCP. Across the 190 pentest ads, 29.5% cited CREST Certified, 25.3% CHECK Team Member and 16.8% the OSCP. CREST runs an equivalency programme that bridges the two: OSCP or OSCP+ holders who also hold the CREST Practitioner Security Analyst (CPSA), gained by exam, can apply for CREST's CRT within three years of passing the OSCP, for a £100 admin fee plus VAT for UK residents. A CRT gained that way can't be used toward CHECK.
Remote OSCP jobs
Remote pentest work is common enough to search for. In ITJobsWatch's six-month UK sample, 50 of the 190 permanent pentest ads were listed as work from home, with a median of £80,000, and 20 of the 88 ads citing the OSCP were too.
Three kinds of work keep testers on site: physical and social engineering tests, internal tests where the client wants someone in the building, and government or defence work. More than a quarter of the UK pentest ads (27.4%) asked for security clearance, and cleared roles tend to involve time at client or secure sites. If remote is a must, filter for consultancies that test web apps, cloud and external networks.
Entry-level OSCP jobs and what gets you hired
Entry-level pentest roles exist, but there aren't many. ITJobsWatch's six-month UK sample of 190 pentest ads held four junior penetration tester ads and four graduate ones. A common route in runs through a neighbouring job: helpdesk, system administration, networking or a SOC. Those roles teach how companies run Windows, Linux and networks, which is exactly what you'll be testing.
What makes a junior CV with the OSCP stand out:
- IT experience, even a year on a helpdesk, because it shows you've supported the systems you'll attack.
- A home lab you built and broke, ideally with an Active Directory domain. Our free AD chains give you something to practise against.
- Writing. Reports or write-ups of practice machines whose platforms allow them. Pentesting is a writing job as much as a hacking one, and the report is what the client pays for.
- A methodology you can explain out loud, which the interview questions below test.
OffSec sets no prerequisites for the exam, but it recommends networking, Windows and Linux administration and basic scripting first. If those are new to you, start with our free beginner learning paths before you pay for anything. If you're weighing a cheaper first certificate, our post on the eJPT or Security+ before the OSCP covers when each one helps.
OSCP vs OSCP+ on your CV
Since November 1, 2024, passing the exam gives you two certifications: the OSCP+, which expires three years after it's issued, and the OSCP, which doesn't. If you passed before that date, you hold the OSCP only, and it stays valid for life. On a CV, list both with the year you passed and the OSCP+ expiry date, so a recruiter scanning for either name finds it. When an ad asks for an "active" OSCP, ask if it means an in-date OSCP+. OffSec added one-click verification to its digital certificates in 2022, so an employer can check yours quickly. The renewal routes and the full difference are in our OSCP vs OSCP+ guide.
OSCP interview questions and what good answers cover
Pentest interviews test how you think. Expect methodology and explanation more than trivia, and practise saying your answers out loud. These twelve sit at the level an OSCP holder should be ready for, each with what a strong answer covers.
- Walk me through how you'd test a network you've never seen. Cover scope and rules of engagement, enumeration before exploitation, notes as you go, re-enumerating after every foothold, and the report at the end.
- What's the difference between a vulnerability scan and a penetration test? Cover automated discovery against manual verification, chaining findings together, cutting false positives and showing business impact.
- Your first scan finds almost nothing. What next? Cover widening the scan to every TCP port and then UDP, looking harder at what is open, checking your assumptions about scope, and time-boxing before you move on.
- Explain Kerberoasting and how to defend against it. Cover what it relies on (service accounts whose passwords can be cracked offline) and the fixes: long random or managed service account passwords, and alerts on unusual ticket requests.
- Why is an NTLM hash almost as useful to an attacker as the password? Cover that some Windows authentication accepts the hash itself, and the defences: unique local admin passwords, fewer admin rights and less NTLM in use.
- What is SQL injection and how does a developer fix it? Cover user input ending up inside a database query, parameterised queries as the fix, and least-privilege database accounts to limit the damage.
- Where do you look for privilege escalation on Windows and on Linux? Name categories: misconfigured services and permissions, stored credentials, scheduled jobs and outdated software, and say how you'd decide which to check first.
- What makes a good pentest report? Cover an executive summary a manager can read, findings ranked by risk, steps clear enough for someone else to reproduce, and fixes the client can act on.
- How would you explain a critical finding to a non-technical manager? Cover business impact in plain words, how likely abuse is, and what to fix first.
- Mid-test, you find signs that someone else is already in the network. What do you do? Cover stopping, recording what you saw, and contacting the client through the channel agreed in the rules of engagement.
- Tell me about a time you got stuck. Cover how you noticed, what you changed (re-enumerating, rereading notes, time-boxing) and what you'd do differently. Practice machines make fine examples.
- Tell me about your OSCP. Cover how you prepared, how you managed your time and how you wrote the report. Keep the exam machines out of it: OffSec's exam FAQ calls discussing exam information a violation of its academic policy, and an interviewer who holds the cert will notice.
For the technical questions, our PenTesting Quiz playlist has pentest quizzes you can answer out loud, the way you would in an interview.
FAQ
Is the OSCP still worth it in 2026?
For pentest, red team and consulting careers, yes. UK ads citing it rose from 48 to 88 year on year in ITJobsWatch's six-month data, and a pass now brings an OSCP that never expires plus an OSCP+ that lasts three years.
Is the OSCP good for beginners?
It's a good goal for a beginner and a hard first exam. OffSec sets no prerequisites but recommends networking, Windows and Linux administration and basic scripting first, so build those before you pay for an attempt.
Can you get a job with just the OSCP?
Sometimes, though nobody can promise it. Junior pentest ads are scarce, so the OSCP works best alongside IT experience, a home lab and written reports you can show.
What is the OSCP salary in India?
No source measures pay for OSCP holders. For penetration testers in India, PayScale showed an average base of about ₹5.1 lakh from 117 profiles and Indeed about ₹17.3 lakh from only 13 salaries, both read in November 2026.
Are there remote OSCP jobs?
Yes. In ITJobsWatch's UK data for the six months to November 2, 2026, 50 of 190 permanent pentest ads were listed as work from home. Physical tests, some internal tests and cleared government work usually happen on site.
Try the work before you buy the exam
If pentesting is the goal, the cheapest way to test your fit is to do some of the work. Work through the free beginner learning paths if Linux and networking are new, then follow the OSCP+ roadmap. Run one of our free AD chains this week and write it up as a short report, the habit that interviews and the exam both reward.
Elloochador, one of our students, wrote: "I'm a Sr Security Engineer. I really do like the content in here. From the templates, courses, and to the projects everything set up in here is well worth the value." (More reviews)
